I met this author at the National Book Club Conference 2015. This book started slow but now I think it is so on the mark. Lloyd L. Johnson's treatment of the abusive relationship merry-go-round is excellent. In the beginning I felt the plot and character development was lagging a bit. But about half way through the novel I found myself becoming increasingly interested in the characters. The plot winds creatively through and around abuse cycles families often find themselves in. Cheryl Greene's experience in her family of origin make her a perfect candidate to live a life quite similar to her mother's who is also an abuse victim. I like that the author has several subplots that include sexuality, abuse, infidelity, rape, etc. without it being too much. He expertly weaves these issues together without boring or overwhelming the main story line. My rating changed from a 3 to a 5 by the end of the novel. I would recommend this one.

I was pleasantly surprised. I was thinking that it would be the typical urban/street lit book. However, it is a book that is about the story and its characters. Enjoyable and worth the read.

The Dog Catcher by Lloyd Johnson was a page-turner. It was hard for me to put this book down. I love that the story gives a background from her early childhood, her parent's relationship, her issues with self and relationship; it addresses homosexuality, abusive relationships, mental instabilities, and a host of other issues. Cheryl's issues can and are those of many ladies today. I love the twists, the turns, the letdowns and the wins. I have recommended this book to my family, friends and book clubs. Great job! I'm looking forward to reading some of Mr. Lloyd Johnson's other work.

Damn, is it one issue you didn't touch on in this book? Domestic violence, rape, homosexuality, AIDS, suicide, teen pregnancy, racism, hate crimes, gambling, abandonment, bullying, alcoholism, infidelity, hypocrisy. Did I miss anything? What I don't understand is why Cheryl took so much credit and found so much fault with herself for what happened to Plez? He deserved that and more.

Once I started reading this, it was practically impossible to put down. The characters come alive, baggage and all. No sugary substance here, it tells things as they are.
